Not So Shallow: The Show, JKxRG (Review by Maria Scenna)

Fashion may be all fluff for some people, but not so for designers Tracy Belben, Helena Grant, and Julie Kontos, who came together on September 30th, 2015, to celebrate fashion week and raise funds for Women’s Lunch Place, a Boston women’s shelter. In an event called ‘The Show,’ Race&Grant, a duo formed by jewelry artist Tracy Belben of T*Racy and handbag creator turned stylist Helena Grant, showcased eccentric jewelry pieces and bold body armor, followed by uplifting and soft floral designs by award-winning apparel designer Julie Kontos.

As spectators snapped photos and posted them on Instagram under the hashtag #JKXRG2015, sleek models sashayed along the white brick walls of the leather district loft. In the first presentation by T*Racy, chain links were formed into plunging V-neck dresses, skirts, and bold costume pieces. A barely-there, spider-web silhouette-like number was a collective favorite, and the collection ended with an intricately-designed body armor dress.

Helena Grant of H.GrantStyle styled and imagined the next installation. Models came out walking in paper outfits to Rachel Platten’s “Fight Song.” They moved in jarring positions and removed the paper at the end of the song, with Grant explaining the motif and how we should all celebrate our individuality.

The last collection by Julie Kontos was a mix of sophisticated meets flirty. Outfits included high-waisted satin pants paired with sleeveless tops, all white ensembles, flowy cut-outs, extravagant tulle skirts, pink shimmer, and floral designs. The opening reception may have lured people in, but the clothing most definitely made them stay, and for a great cause, this Boston Fashion Week 2015 event was one for the books!
